| Grace Adams has two good girlfriends from high school: strong-willed Callie and flirtatious Tory. And then there’s her old lab partner, Eddie Mancilla. He was fat back then, but he had a thing for Grace, and she had a crush on the guy who always rescued her in chem class. She was known as the brain back then, but somehow always messed up when Eddie was around.
The years have gone by. Grace still seems to be a bit of a flake, nearly setting fire to her apartment in an attempt to remove the curse she believes is ruining her life. Eddie, now a fit and hunky fireman, rescues her once more. Eddie and Grace live in the same apartment building now. He is intent on making fire chief, while Grace, a kindergarten teacher, is getting over a really bad relationship. Eddie isn’t ready for a permanent partner. His delightful Italian family, however, wants him married and settled. Grace is strongly attracted to the new Eddie. The truth is, she was attracted to the old one. Heather Rae Scott gives us a delightful tale of missteps as the two reconnect as grownups. Eddie still hoards his fat boy insecurities, while Grace maintains a good deal of her adolescent persona. Their journey to an adult relationship makes an interesting and amusing read. The romance is both sweet and sensual, but it is the peripheral characters who really develop the plot. Eddie’s outspoken Catholic relatives add a lot of spice and direction. Grace’s sensible Methodist mother knows where her daughter should be heading. Nancy Barnes, the mother of one of Grace’s students, is a normal seeming woman with some psychic abilities. And Grace’s old friends try to direct her life, even though they are themselves unsettled. The book has goofy humor and a great sense of fun. It is a wonderful example of how our high school selves stay with us, even though we change. A truly enjoyable book.
