Laura Wickenham, a 27 year old widow of 6 years, lived with her sister, Phyllis, and her niece, Belinda. Her husband had been killed in battle, and she now felt that she could never allow herself to love again. Phyllis was a clingy, whiny widow who expected Laura to take care of her and Belinda. Now Belinda was in love with a young man whom Laura felt was undesirable, but Phyllis felt, because of his status, he was perfect for her if only she was a little older.

This is a complicated story with several characters; however, it was written so well that it did not become confusing or boring. This book tells the story of Laura’s life, both before her marriage (which included a scandal) and presently as she was being pursued by two men, both of whom her sister approved. However, she felt little attraction for either. Her scandalous past involved the father of Belinda’s present “man friend,” Lord Harris. When his uncle, Ross Stansfield, began paying court to her, Phyllis was livid! Either of her other suitors would have allowed Phyllis to live with them if she should marry; she could not allow Laura to become involved with that family again! She definitely could not survive alone.

Ms. Lynne Martin has chosen a plot which has intrigue, love and familial responsibilities. She has a definite gift of the written word. This tale involves an unwanted young love, a web of deceit in the form of spying for the French, and a secret involvement between Laura and Ross. The story flows so well, it is almost impossible to put down.

Laura has a bit of everything you could possibly want in a novellove, of course, conflict between parent/child, courtship, meddling older sister, and all the excitement this entails. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly. I would love to read other of her works.
