| King Henry VIII had spoken! Lady Susanna Cavendish thought she has escaped the King’s notice, but she soon found that he had signed papers betrothing her to a laird, a duke, but he is Scottish! He is from the clan Ruthvon, the most brutal of all. The rival Kings of England and Scotland had arranged this marriage as a political bond between the countries.
Lady Susanna was a reader; her father refused to allow her to take even half her collection of books. She was furious as well as disappointed. When her caravan left her home, she had a trunk filled with her favorites; she promised to send for the others. Her closest servants were going with her to Scotland. But travel from England to Scotland proved to be a trip from hell. During the trip, Susanna was kidnapped and plans were made to rape and mutilate her. Her handmaiden was killed while defending her ladyship, and several of her other servants were killed. Before Susanna was raped, she was rescued by a stranger who did not kill the captor, Spencer, but injured him so that he would never be able to rape again. Blair Ruthvon left his home to meet the caravan bringing his fiancé to him. When she did not appear on time, he went to find her. He managed to reach her before she was compromised, but she misunderstood who he was. He did not tell her at first because she was in shock from the carnage she had witnessed. However, their attraction to each other was instantaneous. They traveled for several days before reaching his home where he was recognized. Was she mad? It took days for things to settle down! Settle down? No, of course not! There are so many difficulties for the couple to face that there is seldom a moment when the couple could even get to know each other before the wedding. Did the wedding calm things down? Who has a vendetta against the couple? How do things work out? There is so much going on in this book. I absolutely loved it! I highly recommend this story to all the readers.
