| Nikki Seek has no idea about the trouble waiting for her when she stops in Lost River, Missouri, to visit her aunt and her aunt's ex-husband on her way home to Michigan. Her aunt has gone missing and she finds herself a suspect in the murder of her aunt's ex-husband. It doesn't help that she finds herself extremely attracted to the Lost River Sherriff, John McGuinn. McGuinn isn't sure what to make of the sexy DNR agent but her appearance in Lost River the night of the murder makes him suspicious. Either she's guilty as hell or she's the murderer's next target.
Opening with a murder is a good way to catch readers' interest and keep them reading to find out who the murderer is. The mystery deepens with Nikki's unexpected arrival in Lost River and the immediate attraction between her and McGuinn. The plot thickens with the protesters who are also possible murder suspects and their link to the break in at Nikki's DNR office up in Michigan. There are a number of plot twists that keep readers guessing as to who is behind all of the crimes, but there are also enough clues that most readers will figure out who is responsible for the murder before it is actually revealed. Though the murder is the mail focus for both Nikki and McGuinn, neither one is able to ignore the intense attraction they feel. They both know that getting involved during the investigation is not a good idea, but that doesn't stop them. Nikki, with her open honesty and easily read expressions, is exactly what McGuinn needs after his past relationship made him distrust women. Likewise, McGuinn is the type of man Nikki needs to get past her emotional barriers she has built to isolate herself from the pain of loss. Their interactions show just how important each is to the other. This is an enjoyable read with good characters, an interesting plot, and a satisfying ending.
