| Donna and two of her daughters, Jillian and Shari take a rented
hearse to Minnesota to fulfill her mother's last request. Her mother
had requested to be buried in Minnesota and have a memorial service
with her family there. Along the way many things go wrong beginning
when the casket flies out of the hearse onto the rain soaked road.
While at the memorial service Shari has another stroke and is
hospitalized. Jillian also finds out by reading her grandmother's
journals that her grandmother has a whole other family including a
son that no one knew about. This family is about to go through many
changes but with love they must just come out for the better.
Leaving Mama by Bobbie Cole is an emotionally stirring story about the love of family. Donna is the mother that feels she must control all that happens around her. She feels responsible for everyone and comes off as overbearing. Jillian is the daughter that drops out of school, smokes dope and who her mother believes is a total failure. Shari was the good daughter. She went to school to become a teacher and has a family. But now she feels she has failed her mother too by having had several strokes and is unable to care for herself or her daughter. The girls take the opportunity to spread their wings and become free of their mother's apron strings for the first time while they are Minnesota. Donna goes through feeling betrayed and abandoned by her children. The reader will feel the pain of a mother feeling she is losing her children. But there also comes a time of awakening when she actually starts to see her daughters as capable adults. I laughed and I cried while I read this wonderful story about family. Leaving Mama is an emotionally touching story about a family that experiences the growing up and letting go of their children and how love brings them together. I highly recommend this story to all the readers.
