| Shelley wasn't sure of her past, only what her abductor had told her about how her family had thrown her away for being a werewolf. After thirty-five years, she'd finally turned on the human hunter who had held her prisoner for so long. She killed him, and ran away to finally search for the freedom she had never known. James LeVeau Riley, alpha of the Wolf Creek pack, was on the last leg of his business trip when he stopped at dinner and sniffed out a frightened, lone wolf. The fact that the female didn't recognize him as one of her own confused him, and he was compelled by her fear to help her. Together, they try to find out who she is and where she came from.
This is a wonderful love story, and the fact they are werewolves only adds to the tension. This stand alone book, the third in the Legacy series, is my favorite. A woman who had been a prisoner and mistreated for so long shows she has the courage to get herself free. Then she strikes out on her own to try and make a life for herself, to try and find out who, and what, she is. She meets James who offers her a chance to learn about her heritage, and maybe even where she came from but trust comes hard and can't afford to lose her freedom again by letting herself rely on anyone. The whole Legacy series revolves around strong women making their way in the male dominated world of the werewolves. In each book, the woman not only has to deal with arrogant males, but purist wolf who don't accept half-breed wolves and human hunters who believe the only good paranormal is a dead one. There were times the danger the hunters posed was so painful I wanted to put the book down because I was afraid of what was coming next. The subplot of Quinn looking for his twin will lead to a Book 4, I'm sure. The sign of a good novel is the change and growth of the main characters and the lessons they learn along the way. N.J. Walters does this to perfection. You have action and romance and strong women who are willing to take risks to get what they want. What could be better?
