Having gained notoriety for their investigative abilities, Orlando Coppersmith and Jonty Stewart are summoned to help with the mysterious death of the king's former mistress. The excitement of having a new case to work on is tempered by Orlando's role as an undercover dancing professional. Being together and yet apart is torture for the two lovers. Finding a way to communicate and spend time together while maintaining Orlando's cover is necessary to stay sane. They hope to solve the case quickly with the help of Jonty's father, but threatening notes shoved under Jonty's door and a second death muddle matters more.

Jonty and Orlando are at it again. Their excitement about having another case to solve is evident as they anxiously wait outside the office of the Master of St. Bride's to find out if they?ll be allowed to leave the college to investigate. It's only after the details sink in that they realize Orlando?s undercover assignment means they'll be separated for the length of the investigation. Their despondency over that separation is a touching reminder of just how much they mean to each other. It is fun watching them find inventive ways to overcome that separation while keeping Orlando's cover intact.

Though their relationship is a key ingredient in the story, the events surrounding the mysterious murder and what the investigation turns up really drive it. Mr. Stewart's presence adds a nice touch given his connection to the victim and her family. He also helps out with Jonty and Orlando's dilemma of being apart during the investigation. His interactions with everyone involved really highlight what a great character he is and how having him as a father helped Jonty become the person he is. Even with his help, it takes a great deal to untie all the little twists the case takes during the course of the investigation.

Charlie Cochrane has written a fantastic story full of emotion and plenty of twists that will keep the reader guessing. There is never a dull moment and each long-awaited encounter between Jonty and Orlando will keep readers satisfied.
