| What a great book! Ms. Mary Wine has written a book with a fresh outlook, a greatly believable cast of characters, a beautifully challenging love story, with a near-perfect ending! This novel was one that I had a hard time putting down, and it was not a ‘one-sitting’ narrative.
Ms. Brianna Spencer had quite a bit of trouble keeping the mill running prosperously; her father had gone hunting and never returned. The entire town believed he was dead—Brianna refused to accept that. She was constantly counseled to marry, to sell the mill, or any of various other solutions to single-handedly trying to make a living grinding at the only mill in town. Her biggest obstacle to living her life and waiting for her father’s return was a nasty looking, disgusting smelling, revolting acting, “man” in the form of Joseph Corners. The only thing worse than Mr. Corners, alone, was adding his repulsive father and brothers to his marriage offer! The day she took the money she had managed to scrap together to town, the banker was disappointed that he could not sell her place for back taxes; her excitement at being settled with the bank for another year was short-lived. Her home was broken into while she was in the mill; she escaped through a trap door into the icy waters. She was rescued by Sloan McAlister, a railroad security agent. After he got her thawed out and back home, she was kidnapped; Sloan discovered her missing and set out to find her. How he found her and what he did afterwards is the basic story. It is a wonderfully flowing, easy to read, tale of how true love can change even the toughest man into a different individual. I applaud Ms. Wine in her newest work; this is a great book that will grip the reader and remain in your mind long after the reading is complete!
