| Maria. Maria and her daddy...Maria and Paul...Maria and Peter...Maria and Thomas. She was stunningly beautiful but she was not like other women. Maria was slower than most. What she lacked in competence, she made up for in her ability to love and accept those in her life. Her greatest love was the ocean. Living in L.A. allowed her to spend a lot of time there. Her father had plans for her marriage to be profitable to him.
Paul was slated to become the next mayor of New York. His late father had been mayor. His competitive mother was determined Paul would help her maintain status quo. Then life as Paul knew it changed. He went to a ball in New York in 1931 and saw her. He didn’t even talk with her but he knew she was the one for him. He started writing letters to L.A. He, however, didn’t hear from her for quite a while. McMullen unfolded the lives of several individuals into a very poignant story. This uniquely written book grabbed my attention. I’ve never read anything quite like this. The love-affair by mail was so unusual. This author did, however, make it believable. The various men in Maria’s life represented several diverse areas of her life. The way each man related to her was very interesting. The problem the main character faced in this book, and how others related to it, created a remarkable contrast. The characters were likeable (or not) and realistic. The sensuality was understated although implied. The storyline flowed well and kept my attention. The ending was absolutely strange! I recommend this book for an unexpected reading experience. You will be entertained.
