Merrie Calhoun (known as Cal) is a young woman, dressed as a man, doing spy work between the North and South during the Civil War. She maintains a grungy, dirty image so that no one will recognize that she is a woman. Her allies include Reverend John Bartholomew and her brothers, Sam, Tom and Kit. Kit is a Sergeant in the Unit where Cal is going with some information. Kit's shenanigans throughout the book cause many problems, but the love of her brothers and her father is what lured Cal into this war. There are so many obstacles in this story it could be hard to keep up with them except that the book is so intriguing that it is hard to put down.

A man known only as "the Colonial" is searching for Cal and Reverend Bartholomew; their lives, as well as those of their allies, are constantly in danger. The pursuit of the spies by "the Colonial" is a big part of the story.

Ms. Walpole has a winner in this novel; what an imagination! The way her brother Kit pushes Cal onto his superior officer, Major Chris McMasters, a surgeon, and then tries to fight the Major because he "falls for" Cal, is poignant. The love story that ensues is woven throughout all the other actions of the book. I personally do not usually enjoy war stories; however, this is one of the best I have ever read. I do not like much suspense in my personal reading, but I was definitely not disappointed in reviewing this book.

I believe that Ms.Walpole has an absolute winner in this book. Even those who are not normally historical fans will enjoy this book. I encourage you to read it as soon as possible.
