Her captors don't know she can speak. They don't even know she can think. They all assume she's just an animal with a body similar to a human's. But they're wrong. Even now, she's plotting. She's entering her second, and last, heat. If she isn't impregnated during this one, she becomes sterile. And since she's the last of her kind, there's no doubt in her mind that she won't have any cubs. But along with that is the growing power she can't use safely without a counterpart, a true mate. She will use it, though, and take out the Queen and anyone else she can. She refuses to be the Queen's pet a moment longer. However, when the strange male, similar to herself but not of her species, is dragged before the Queen, she has a hope that perhaps living isn't in vain at all.

He-o heard the little female plotting suicide from outside the palace. And when he finally sees her, he's determined to get her out of the palace.

Liger was a little different from what I usually read from Ms. Burke. The tone was a lot more serious, for one, without a smart-mouth heroine. It also seemed like it was an earlier work because the intricacies I usually see in her characters wasn't as strong, but that may have been due to some of the plot devices, such as the amount of focus on the heroine and her inability to speak. But Liger did have the characteristic sense of adventure, and a strong, realistic urgency throughout the story. When I originally sat down with this, I only intended to check out the first few chapters, but I ended up reading it to the very end. I needed to see what would happen with all the characters. If there is ever a sequel, I'll jump on it faster than you can say the word. I really enjoyed the world Ms. Burke created, and the secondary characters added to an already good story. The romance was excellent, even though the characters didn't know each other that well. Ms. Burke created the emotions and feelings lying between them very well, including all the wonderful sizzle. If you've ever enjoyed cat-men stories, Liger isn't a book to pass up.
