Tegan Ellis is on a mission - better conditions for the miners in her community. Before he died, her father gathered evidence of the new owner's neglect and Tegan decides to confront the man and demand he do something about it. Sean Griffith started out as a prizefighter, then went on to become a self-made millionaire. He has become aware of the appalling conditions at the mine he won in a poker game and has plans to make improvements.

But when Tegan offers herself in exchange for those improvements, he accepts - believing it's the only chance he has to get close to her.

One of the things I liked about this book was its consistent historic tone. I felt immersed in the time period throughout the book. Tegan was an independent, strong-willed young lady who stood by her convictions and she was very funny. Her dialog was witty and intelligent, and she had a distinct voice.

Sean was a very strong presence as well. Definitely more of a darker personality. He had his moments of humor as well and he could appreciate Tegan's irreverent sense of humor. The reason, though, that I didn't give this book a higher rating is because, although he had many "good" moments, Sean was just a little too dark for me.

Another thing I liked about this book is that each character stayed true to who he or she was, even if that meant things got ugly at times. So although I haven't given this book as high of a rating as I have to some others, that's not because of the writing. Lilac is very explicit, so be aware of that before you read it. Ms. Trent is an extremely talented writer in my opinion. This is the first book I've read by this author, but I liked her style and voice enough that I would try reading another of her books without hesitation.
