London in the year 1867, where duels are quite commonplace. For Lilys fianc Nigel this will be his last, for he doesnt survive long afterward. The only fortunate part of his death is that hed had enough to leave her a small fortune, instead of debts, enabling her to travel to her Uncle Arthurs home, near Sacramento, in America. It will be months before she arrives at her destination. The story leaps ahead to 1868 with Lily on a steamer heading up the Sacramento River on the last stretch of her journey. Her uncle has arranged a marriage for her with his employer.

The well known gambler King Callaway is on the same steamer, and occupies his time observing the beautiful woman dressed in her mourning garb. Grabbing an opportunity to get to know her, as much as might be allowed in this time period by two unmarried strangers, he discovers they are both headed to Grass Valley, where he owns a large business, but he doesnt yet tell her this. The lusty attraction between the two is aflame just a short while later, and they share wonderful hours in bed together, until a disagreement cuts short their evening.

Splitting up once the steamer docks, Lily figures that she wont see him again. Little does she know; it turns out that her intended husband is Kings uncle!

This is a wonderful story with two slightly extraordinary characters coming together and realizing that they are meant for each other. I enjoyed the fact that everything works out well for all involved. A true love story for all romance readers.
