| A serial killer was stalking rich gentlemen in London. Lily, the flame-haired Madame and vampire, discovered it was one of her girls and tried to stop her from killing the latest victim, but was unsuccessful. A crowd saw them arguing over the body. Constance fled and Lily withdrew into a nearby church to pull her thoughts together and decide what to do. She was joined there by James Savage, the nephew of the victim. He recognized Lily from his uncle's description and returned with her to the Establishment for a little private time. Lily planned to erase any of his thoughts connecting her to his uncle's murder; she never expected she'd fall in love.
The first book of the Ladies of the Night series is an unequivocal triumph for Ms. Dickson. The time period is well researched and the knowledge artfully used. The several prominent characters are admirable, attractive and endearing. The plot is believable, even with vampire characters. Our hero and heroine are pitted not only against the vampire/human problem but also a police inspector so full of himself that he'd actually falsify evidence to convict an innocent. The pace of the story is quick, smooth and neatly managed. Lily by Sarah Dickson is in two words, well done. It is also a very exciting read with sex between the lovers an exploration of all that it can be with the more experienced partner teaching the novice everything that has been missing. The lessons are hot enough to melt the average human. When I finished this book I picked up book two and dived straight in without a break. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves to read.
