Morgan Gable lived with her father, the remaining half of the Adele-Rupert Gable act known in the 1860s. When her mother disserted them, Morgan’s father seemed to go down emotionally and financially. During this period, while Morgan admired Daniel Connelly from afar, he came to their rescue and saved her and her father from utter humiliation. She never forgot his kindness. Five years later, they met again.

Daniel, a world renowned tenor, lost his voice and his career when he tried to fight the Chicago Fire of 1871 which took the life of his beloved wife, Helene. While Morgan was devastated, she had no idea the conniving business partner of her father, Camilla Browne, had scheduled that Morgan would reenact the part of Helene Connelly to appease the haunted Daniel. His friends meant well but were unaware of the dire consequences. When Daniel met Morgan again, he determined that he would marry her, without promise of love, to save his citizenship and avoid deportment.

This book by Barbara Scott was a phenomenal work of art considering the intricate works that were involved in this storyline. The poignancy of the relationship of this couple was so emotionally charged that it was impossible not to love them and cheer the couple toward happily-ever-after.

These characters were strong and determined to stand by each other. The myriad of emotional ups and downs was so engaging that it was impossible not to fall in love with them. There were so many obstacles the couple faced; it was incredible to try to guess what would happen next. The ending was so surprising it was a shock to the entire book’s reading.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romance. It’s a great book and one that you could cry, laugh, cheer, cry again, and love the challenges involved.
