Cassie Riely couldn't remember anything that happened to her or the ordeal she had gone through. The police had found her badly beaten body on the side of the road, her skull almost crushed. If it wasn't for the gold locket around her neck the police would have classified her as another Jane Doe.

Her case was assigned to Dr. Daniel Lucas who, after seeing the extent of her injuries, wondered what type of person would do such a cruel thing to another human being. He didn't know how, but he intended to bring the attacker to justice.

As Cassie lay in a coma, it was another time and life that came into her memory. Taken back to the 1800's Cassie Riely was a young woman who had married young to Bobby Lee. Bobby Lee was never one who wanted to settle down and though Cassie was a good wife, she faced his abusive side most of their married life. The only saving grace besides her son Joey was the farm. Though Bobby had been gone for some months now telling her that he was joining Custer's army, the running of the farm was basically left to her.

One bright morning a troop of soldiers arrived at the farm seeking water for their horses. It was that day that Cassie learned of the fate of Custer and his men. She also learned that Bobby was not listed among the dead and that he was never with Custer. She had to face the reality that Bobby had deserted his family. Though it would have been some comfort to know he was dead, the fact that he could at any day come back was a fate worse than death to her.

It was the turning point in her life when Daniel Lucas entered it. Sent to her by her dear friend in town, this drifter only sought a place to sleep. Even the barn would be a suitable place to stay. In exchange he would help her on the farm. Having a man live on her property was almost unheard of in those days yet Cassie did need the help. And since she was still a married woman whose husband could return at any time, there didn't seem to be any problem.

Daniel soon became part of the family, almost like he had been there for years. The friendship he had with Cassie began to grow into more. It was Cassie who even said that she had fallen in love with him yet because Bobby Lee was still alive she could never act on these feelings.

Back in present time, Cassie lay in her coma while the investigation continued to find the person who had attacked her. It was soon clear that her husband Bobby Lee had something to do with it if he wasn't the perpetrator himself. For seven weeks she lay there between life and death and on the seventh week, something took her from the past and speeding back into the present. Dr. Lucas' son, Joey, had become a frequent visitor to Cassie's room each day telling her stories and bringing her drawings he had done in school that day. Last year Joey had lost his mother after she was in a coma and as he would talk to her, at five years old the world of a young boy was seeing his mother again laying there. This day Joey had wanted to show Cassie the feather he had brought to her. When he tried to place it near her he slipped and feel off the chair. His screams sent hospital staff running in but more than that it brought Cassie back to the present and she opened her eyes.

The first face she saw was Dr. Lucas and she called him Daniel. No one thought of it at the time but Cassie had the sensation that this was her Daniel from the past. All Daniel Lucas knew was that after all this time she was awake and he had fallen in love with her.

Her memory of what happened was vague yet what had been pieced together pointed to her husband. Bobby Lee was a cruel and abusive man who even after his divorce from Cassie still wanted to control her. Knowing that he had tried to kill her once and failed would not stop him from trying again and this time succeeding. This time Daniel Lucas would not let it happen.

In this world there are so many mysteries that go unexplained, faces, names, vices all seem to make us remember. Could it be just what we want to believe or do we all truly have past lives that enable us to find and meet those of our past again?

Ms. Wilson has given us all a step into the past and posed an interesting question. In our own lives is there something or someone still that we will once again meet?

I loved the whole story both past and present and the twist at he end is priceless. I must read for all who love romance and for those who dream of that knight in shining armor.
