| This is an anthology of nine American Pioneer Christmas romances. Although they share a common theme, each is different and unique. From blizzards and earthquakes to conniving relatives and heart-rending tragedies, these stories run the gamut yet all strive to show God's boundless love and grace.
There's something about a log cabin that just draws me in. While I enjoyed some stories more than others, the book as whole was a delightful experience. There's humor, sorrow, joy, fear and most of all hope woven throughout these tales. Snow Angel is a sweet story that brings together a 'modern' school teacher, an old-fashioned sheriff and a surprise blizzard. The dialogue is well-written and entertaining. Traps and Trimmings is my favorite story in the anthology. Mina is such a strong and optimistic woman. Although Sam seems rough in the beginning, he is a caring and honorable man. The story includes a fictional account of the real Madrid earthquake that occurred in Dec. 1811 in Kentucky. Wonderful descriptions and characterization. A Grand County Christmas is the most touching and at times the most heartbreaking story in the book. Very emotional and inspirational. The stories all show God's grace and caring. The men and women search to find their place in the world and God's purpose for them. The setting adds a special quality to the stories. The American frontier makes a spectacular backdrop. While some endings struggle with credibility issues, maybe it doesn't really matter. It's Christmas and there's no better time for miracles. This would be a terrific book to curl up with on a December night.
