In the pre Civil War era of the 1800's, slavery and wife beating were very common place as Mary Catherine Con Brooks discovers as they make their way to her land by wagon. Her father, Reverend Levy Cone, caught her and a young man in the act of a simple light kiss. It disgusted the reverend so he separated them and forced her to marry his best friend, the horrendous Horace Brooks who he also her dowry land. During this journey, she survives a supposed Indian attack. It left her scared and running for her life.

Exhausted from running, Mary Catherine comes face to face with Con St. Claire and collapses at his feet. With a torrential chaos almost upon them, Con has no choice but to bring her to his cabin on his land and care for her there. This is the beginning of an adventure that unfolds between both Mary Catherine and Con.

The depiction of the slave talk really helped in the realism of the story. I had somewhat of a tough time in believing some of the things that happened -- the cruelty, greed, the hauntingly aggressive way the novel advances. The realism of the story is flabbergasting. Trouble follows Mary Catherine everywhere she goes.

Mary Catherine gives off the needy stance that feels rather mousy. Con portrays a virile upstanding gentle Englishman plantation boss very nicely with his creed and strength, especially atop his gorgeous horse. John, Con’s son, is presented wonderfully in the novel. The mean secondary characters are so cruel and aggressive it is absolutely nerve wracking how dysfunctional and materialistic they really are.

The sensual moments between the main characters feel like they have on again, off again sexual encounters that left me rather bereft and wondering if they would ever come together. I found that they gave a wonderful show though somewhat slight of want and need. I liked the novel, mostly for the danger and to learn the outcome for Mary Catherine.
