| Richard Handley, Viscount Compton, had resigned from
his duties as a spy for the British Admiralty before
the war with Napoleon ended, but when his best friend,
Lord Walter FitzGibbon, shows up at his Paris lodgings
badly wounded and with an important mission that must
be completed, Richard decides to play the game of
espionage one last time. While making his way to
Calais, where a ship awaits to take him and the
documents he carries to England, Richard is attacked
by French agents. He manages to escape, but wounded
and bleeding profusely, he soon loses consciousness.
When Fleur Bénèt de Montigny sees the injured man her servant found in the woods, her heart goes out to him. Though still recovering from influenza, Fleur tends his wounds. She soon discovers her patient is an Englishman and decides to ask for his help. She wants him to locate her mother’s family when he returns to England. Although they disowned her mother years ago, Fleur longs to meet them because they are the only family she has left. Fleur accompanies Richard to the ship, and at the last minute, she announces that she will be going with him. He tries to make her stay, but the stubborn girl won’t take no for an answer. She insists she can take care of herself, but she doesn’t know of the dangers that await them in England. LORD COMPTON’S FOLLY is a magnificent Regency romance. It’s beautifully written and thoroughly engrossing. The powerfully vivid characters draw you into the story and keep you turning the pages. Fleur is sweet, generous, compassionate, strong, stubborn, brave, and bold—a wonderful mix of traits. Richard, a dreamy hero, just gets sexier and more lovable as the story progresses. The secondary characters are simply delightful, especially Fitz, Richard’s best friend. I hope Ms. Harrison plans to make him the hero in one of her future books.
