| Black Bear dreamed of a wolf and a woman who had the spirit of the wolf with hair the color of midnight and eyes as clear as the lake in the Black Hills. When the medicine man came to him he explained to Black Bear that Wakan Tanka has instructed him to take the woman with the midnight hair as his captive. At Fort Phil Kearney was the woman the medicine man spoke of. Early one morning the Fort was attacked and Jen was taken captive by the warrior Black Bear. She soon learned that the life in the camp was not what she had expected. She was a slave and therefore had no rights. She was Black Bear's woman to do with as he pleased. But Jen was a strong willed woman and to break her spirit would not be easy. In the daylight hours she disobeyed him every time yet at night when they lay together she gave such passion that set fire to his soul that he could not think of anything else. Jen soon realized that no one was coming for her and that she was to be Black Bear's woman all her days. This proud and handsome man who she had fought so hard was the only protection she had in this camp. Soon the hatred she felt melted away and she tried to please him. Black Bear too had become attracted to her and loved her even though he knew the time would come that he would have to take a native wife. His love for her would never stop yet he could not join with a white woman for it was not the custom, especially not for a future chief. His feelings for her would not become the same curse that had haunted his grandfather. Yet when he looked in her eyes he could not bear a life with out her.
A truly fabulous story that has all the passion, love, and suspense that makes a romance novel great. The reader is captured much like Jen was and finds it hard to put the book down. I found Jen grew with her time in the Sioux and the innocence she had when she set out west was not only lost but a woman emerged from that child and would forever be the one who has the wolf spirit. The characters are so defined I could almost see them on the pages as I read. The author has done a wonderful job and I have no question in my mind this book deserves 5 hearts.
