| Lord Devlin Ramsay Carmichael is an enigma. As Marquess of Headleymoor, and a man of complication, he is dedicated to his family while lending protection to his brother, the King. While living his life as a spy for the British crown, Devlin often appears in another identity as Ram Dass. When introduced to the lovely Lady Caroline Berring, he likes how she speaks her mind, and not timid as other women he has encountered. Caroline is lively and spirited, often voicing her opinion. Devlin would like for his friend to pursue her, but the more he is in the confines of Caroline, Devlin is the one that wishes to chase the lovely lady. Caroline doesn’t feel beautiful not after enduring the life she has been born. Mostly not accepted because of a consequence with a scandal, she becomes quite popular after one dance with Devlin. While Devlin’s life is filled with danger and mystery, the two soon find themselves drawn together as obstacles buffet them on every side. They can only hope love will out win any barriers that continue to cross their path.
I love how Lord of Shadows is developed. It is full of an amazing myriad of characters that liven up the story and brings everything into focus. The believable players of Devlin and Caroline move in such a poignant way, one can’t help but fall in love with them. The imagery of the balls, along with the beautifully sketched settings by Mary Lennox, allows the pages to open up into a magnificient array of colors, practically permitting the characters to come alive and leap from the pages. It is a romance filled with passion and love that brings together a relationship most lovely. The blend of intrigue makes the story even more engaging, and quite gratifying.
