Enjoying the sunshine, eight-year-old Amanda had wandered away from her family while at their favourite picnic place on the bank of the Murray River in Johnston's Park. As she walked through the woods, she felt an invisible hand upon her and enjoyed its extra warmth and protection. Returning to the family circle and going for a late day swim, she jumps out of the water and caches a fleeting glimpse of a beautiful and angelic looking woman in a sparkly dress, but before she could tell her mother, the lady with the long dark hair was gone.

The lady was Lorelei, a spirit caught between worlds, moving across time and oceans, from revenge and betrayal, to help stop the salty tears of others from love betrayed. Emerging from the Atlantic's depths to the red sands of Prince Edward Island, Lorelei senses Amanda's future and pain and vows to help her, so they both might find peace or face doom.

As Amanda grows, she experiences losses and heartache, both large and small, from tragedies faced by friends and family members, especially her Grandmother and her older sister, Lynn. After suffering from a near rape experience, Amanda feels the need to face up to her experiences and the violator, so others will not suffer as well. But, her fears still overpower her and she hides both her heart and her beauty, even from Gabe, a fellow university student, while doggedly pursuing her dream of being a writer. Would she ever find true love with her sorrow and could her guardian angel protect her from the real danger that was to come?

This is a compelling coming of age and romance story, capturing both the funny reflections of a young girl coming to terms with a five leaf clover to the harried thoughts of a mother trying to protect her baby from harm. The author has a good eye for detail and her gentle humour brings the characters to life as they struggle to overcome their adversities. While I found some of the chapter transitions confusing, Bingley has done a well-crafted job in bringing a little supernatural touch into the confusion of contemporary life.
