| On vacation with her aunt, Elissa McLaughlin finds
herself thrust back in time to ancient Egypt and into
the days of Queen Hatsheput. Blond hair and blue eyed,
she causes quite a stir and finds herself in the bed
of General Amunnakht. Despite her coloring her
resemblance to Princess Neferure has her getting
involved with court intrigue. To save a kingdom from
the usurpers Senemut and Thutmosis, Elissa must
convince those around her she is indeed the princess.
Sands of Time: Lost in Egypt by Janis Susan May is an exciting time-travel adventure back to ancient Egypt. Elissa had no real interest in Egypt; she thought it was hot and boring. She is frightened to suddenly find herself in ancient Egypt. She does not stay scared long. She has a fiery temper, and her modern way of thinking. While all around her men are telling her that her position is that of a pleasurer to men she proves to them that she is a quick thinker and bravely works to help save the kingdom. The concept of "a woman's place" is mentioned several times in the story. Women are only good for the bedroom, the kitchen, and the nursery. In this way of thinking Elissa believes men have not changed that much and it is up to women to stand up for themselves. The one place Elissa finds herself submitting to the will of a man is in the arms of Amunnakht. There she finds love and passion. Amunnakht is strong, brave and loyal. He finds himself bewitched by his blond barbarian but unable to completely trust her. Trust is something that has to be earned in this story for enemies are all around. The story is filled with intrigue and no one can be trusted. The story is well written and shares the idea of what it was like for a woman during this era. I have always found the story of Hatsheput intriguing. A woman that took on the persona of a male god incarnate dressed as a man and with a fake beard led Egypt as Pharaoh. This story enforces the fact that she must have had many that still believed that she had no place ruling the kingdom and plotted against her. Sands of Time: Lost in Egypt is an exciting time-travel romance filled with intrigue.
