| Gabriel Talbot did the one thing he never thought he could possibly do, although he did it for the right reason. He broke the heart of the woman he loved by telling her that he didn't love her and only wanted her for her money. Even worse, he broke his own heart in the process so her family didn't lose everything because of her father's debt, and handed her over to be married to another man. Yet now a year later, he's back after being hurt at war and still he wants her, even though it's impossible.
Never once had Lady Lydia Landwell doubted her love for Gabriel Talbot. But when he broke her heart, everything she ever believed changed. Even worse, her father is forcing her to marry another man, knowing she's in love with another. But when Gabriel returns from the war injured and near death, her feelings for him resurface. Laura Landon has written a very heart-warming historical in this one of how two people are forced apart by the worst of circumstances, but reunite because of Gabriel's injury. This book had a little suspense in it, where the hero and heroine had to work together to see a loved one home safely as well as themselves from another country, which I thought was written perfectly. The chemistry between Gabriel and Lydia was still there after a year apart and denying their attraction wasn't an option for much longer, which the author penned through the maelstrom of emotions and an incredible sex scene. Both characters were a tad infuriating, because they wanted each other so much. But after everything that had happened between them couldn't let go of the anger and hurt to become a couple again until it was almost too late. Plus, there was the obstacle of Lydia marrying another man. Overall, this is a great book with an amazing plot and dialogue. The secondary characters, Lydia's two brothers – Harrison and Austin – were a delight and I hope to see them get their own stories. I loved the ending, and reading it was such a surprise, because of the announcement given by the man Lydia was supposed to marry. Definitely worth the read, as Gabriel and Lydia were destined to be together no matter what.
