In Montana Territory in 1868, Cora Sullivan had on her best dress and was desperately playing poker hoping to win enough to keep from starving; it had been several days since she had eaten and she hoped the other players would not hear her stomach growl. The last hand was a sure thing—she bet her late father’s gold claim on what she had in her hand. When she lost to a drifter named Jared Matthews, she thought she would surely die on the spot.

Jared realized that she was facing a stroke of bad luck; he offered her room and board and a small salary if she would teach him how to work the claim. He did not know, however, that Cora’s father had mortgaged the claim and, if Cora did not pay the $5,000 by the end of the month, the bank would foreclose anyway. She did not know it, but Jared was also harboring a secret!

Both were attracted to each other but for reasons they did not speak of, they kept quiet about them. Several times, Cora felt that Jared might be attracted to her, but since she was unfamiliar with the way men thought, she was not sure. Each time Jared was tempted to approach Cora, he remembered why he was still running away even after a year had passed. Then, one day in town, Jared saw Robert and knew his time was running out….

This is my first exposure to work by Jennifer Lynn Hoffman, but it definitely will not be my last! She has a wonderfully exciting way of describing her characters which make you feel as if you personally know them. The lesser characters have features which make them distinctive and endear themselves to both the reader and the overall storyline. The sexual tension is handled with tenderness; the absence of graphic terms and words does not detract from the intensity or effectiveness. I truly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to other selections from Ms. Hoffman. I heartedly recommend this book!
