Tom Duncan rode for three weeks to get back home to Clearwater, Colorado Territory. He had left to further his education and then fought in the Civil War. He was met at the door by his foreman, Sam, and told to go to the church where there was an important meeting going on. His Uncle Richard was there; his brother wasn’t. Darrell was, as usual, drunk. There were problems at home, but the possibility of a range war would hurt everyone. This war over water rights was about a woman who, as a little girl, had followed Tom everywhere -- until he hurt her feelings.

Aura Lee Parys, known as Rylee, owned the property which could, potentially, cut water off for all the ranches and farms. She inherited the property from her father—they had owned the property for three generations. Problem was that almost the entire town hated her. The only help she had was two small boys, half-breeds, who were the sons of her best and only friend, Elizabeth Longley. She raised mustang horses and sold them to the Army. The townspeople were adamant in their dislike of her. The ranchers hoped to run her off because when they tried to talk to her, she would shoot at them.

Patricia Bates has written a fabulous book about some of my favorite subjects. I love cowboys, historical settings, a little (or more) conflict, and lots of romance. This book also was a full-length novel which allowed the readers to learn all about the characters. The storyline followed the interactions of the townspeople as well as reunited the main couple. The two were so different, yet so obviously attracted to each other; it was with mixed emotions that I read.

The characters that supported this book could have had their own stories. There were a myriad of emotions which made the novel one I hated to see end. The ending was a big surprise. The sensuality was well written and tasteful. I highly recommend this book, but not for the faint of heart.
