| Distressed by a newspaper report that her fiancé has married another woman while visiting his family in Greece, Livia runs away to her sister in Ocean Breeze. She is newly pregnant and extremely upset over what she thinks is Zale’s betrayal. Though she is soon reassured that the article is erroneous, she does not want Zale to feel obligated to marry her because of her pregnancy. When he does find her, misunderstandings and resentments might just tear them apart once more.
This story starts off with an unlikely scenario. Despite constant contact with Zale by phone, and the irrational behavior of his grandfather, she still believes a newspaper over him. She disappears completely and is annoyed that he doesn’t find her right away. Their passive-aggressive conflict put a bit of a damper on the story, but things turn out all right in the end. As usual the characters are well developed and I like the familiar settings of Ocean Breeze, New York, and East Hampton. Livia’s sister and brother-in-law are great characters and Zale’s mother and grandfather make fine villains. If you like your heroes alpha and your heroines demure, Ms. Hofman writes just for you.
