Sarah Wagner was a woman with a past that she would like to keep hidden but others will never let her forget. When she was eight years old a band of Indians raided her home with her and her mother the only two there. She watched her mother being raped repeatedly then murdered before she was also raped by them and taken captive. She also witnessed her brother being killed. While she lived with her captors, she was tortured and humiliated even more and suffered the scars of that life to the present day.

It was a band of Cherokee who saved her by bartering for her and taking her with them to their village. She remained with these people for a year before they took her back to her people and she was adopted by the Wagner family. Though she was once again back with her own kind, these very same people refused to let her forget the years she spent with the Indians. She now lived alone on the outskirts of Pleasant Dale and was the closest thing to a doctor the town had.

It was because of her skill that the Johnson boys took the wounded Lance Tremaine to her that night. Lance was wounded badly from an ambush earlier that day with three outlaws he had been tracking. Lance was the sheriff of the small town of Ophir, and these three had been robbing the nearby towns.

At first Sarah thought he was too far gone to help but still she had to try to help him. After she had done all she could do for him, she waited to see if he would be able to survive after the loss of so much blood. Lance was a big man and Sarah hoped that he would be able to pull through. His recovery was a slow process but with each day he grew stronger and each day he grew fonder of the angel of mercy who saved his life. To him Sarah was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his life and she had stolen his heart. It wasn't until some time later that as they were heading back to the house that Lance found out who Sarah really was. And to her great shock her brother was still alive and married to Lance's sister!

The story grabs the reader with Sarah's character the moment she's introduced. Her strength and compassion are the center of the story and one feels her traumatic past as she shares it to Lance. You know these two are destined for each other from the moment their eyes meet. The chemistry and passion are there and bring the reader into their world and passion. An interesting plot with a few twists to hold you to your seat.
