After the tragic death of her parents Lillian makes a difficult trip back to England to live with her father's brother the Duke of Suffolk and his family. Her uncle is the only one to welcome her with any warmth and her aunt and cousins become even more hostile when she attracts the attentions of the very handsome Earl of Wessex. The Duchess has earmarked that peer for her daughter Clarice. Wessex is not the only man interested in Lillian; the very attractive Sir Trentham is also avidly pursuing the young American.

I really enjoyed this tale. I particularly liked Lillian and felt sorry for her and her guilt over the loss of her family. I was a little disappointed in the uncle and the way he let his wife and daughters bully Lillian and encouraged their friends and staff to follow their example. The author has a nice grasp of Victorian mores and customs for the most part. Lillian and Dominic are strong and likable characters. Dominic is more than a little spoiled and used to getting his own way, often causing Lillian problems when he should have known better. This is a quick and enjoyable read and I will be looking for more of this author's work in the future.
