| Fiona Wright has taken a job as an intern instructor of aircraft fuel systems maintenance. She doesn't have any experience with aircraft and isn't terribly mechanical, but it will pay the bills she's struggling with. Even if working as a civilian instructor for the Air Force practically gives her optimistic and rather flighty personality hives, she's determined to learn the material and make a success of this new opportunity.
Sgt. William McCrae is very much a by-the-regulations fuel instructor at Sheppard Air Force Base. Having grown up in an Air Force family, his attitude is ingrained. Now he's been told he needs to teach their new civilian instructor. How can he turn this lovely woman, who is dressed in high heels and feminine dresses, into an instructor who is at home teaching the intricacies of fuel systems to young airmen in a respirator, goggles and protective suit. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but after the first two pages, I was hooked. The combination of the considerable insight into the actual tech school details and the great characterizations of the people in the story really made for a great read. Fiona was exactly the type of heroine I really like - she's vulnerable without being a wimp and strong without being a bitch. And her quirky nature was way too close to home for me. The insights into Will's humor and personality kept me from writing him off as a "my way or the highway" hero. Instead, I was cheering him on as he overcomes some of his own prejudices and assumptions. This is not an explicit sex book but I really didn't miss it. Jan was true to her characters and their needs and growth and it shows. This is Jan's first published book and I'm going to be watching for titles from her in the future.
