Sr. Airman Becky Vasquez leaves the service after a traumatic experience, accepts a job on Mackinac Island, and works with Tim Green, a young man saddened over his failure to pass a test for the State Police. He and Becky learn to care for each other. He wants to get over his inability to stand up for himself and she needs to learn to trust men again. They learn a Lt. Teller, executed for treason in 1801, having cursed the area, is haunting the lake and protecting his stolen gold. Whenever anyone gets too close, he sends them to another place. Complicating matters is Billy Tompkins, who left Becky to die in El Salvador. He's on the island, teamed with two evil men, and determined to reconcile with Becky. Becky identifies the ghost and arranges for a final confrontation... Will she find a way to solve the haunting problem? Or will she be sent away like the other vanquished people?

I very much liked this story. It kept me engaged to the end. The background of the curse is well defined and creates a setting for the horror that follows. The characters fit in quite well with the problems caused by the evil lieutenant. However, I had a problem with the extensive grammatical errors, the misuse of your and you're, its and it's, and to and too. There are also many areas where words are either left out or added and don't belong.

The characters are fairly well drawn. However, I found an inconsistency with Becky where in the beginning she shows concern for people she's working with in El Salvador, and yet while on Mackinac, she has unkind thoughts about visitors. It doesn't fit her personality. I do understand her striking out at Tim, as it is a logical step in her learning to trust men again. Also, I thought the two wealthy men were a bit too forthcoming about what they planned. I believe being secretive would be better suited to attaining riches.

I believe that, with addressing some of these issues, this author shows a lot of promise.
