| The Madame of Gravestone: The Corset Chronicles is a steampunk genre novel. The hero, Tripp Monroe, is a photographer from a science magazine sent to cover a steampunk ball. In the process of viewing some of the ball-giver Professor Greggor's personal collection of antiques and steampunk items, Tripp is catapulted into the alternate realm of Westland. In this realm, the civil war ended without a winner, the south became its own country and the west became a monarchy. There he meets the Madame of Gravestone Emma.
For my first foray into steampunk, I have to say I was not very impressed. The story couldn't keep my attention for more than a few pages at a time. For someone who reads fifty pages in an hour or two, this story took me several days to read. The pair are untrusting, sleeping with each other one minute, then disliking each other then next. The use of an old-fashioned camera taking a picture of someone holding a digital camera and vice versa to move between realms is at least a little ingenious. I just could not get into the characters and really felt no sympathy for their plight. Perhaps steampunk just is not for me.
