| Jendaya has had a hard life. Shes got magic in her, but its untrained and not reliable. Shes been thrown out of her home because of her magic, and now lives by herself in the woods. Even though the villagers had treated her cruelly, she still wants to protect them if she can. When she gets in a fight with a magical beast, she nearly uses all her untrained power to stop him and almost dies. What happened to the mage that was supposed to be doing this job?
Teryn has already lost one apprentice, and hes been reluctant to get another one, even though he knows he must. When he senses a large amount of untrained power being used, he travels to the site and finds Jendaya fighting for her life. One look at her and he knows hes found his apprentice. First thing I have to say is that Teryns training methods initially didnt make sense to me. Quite frankly it seems a bit staged that he had to immediately control his new apprentice with sex and that it was all part of training. The magic didnt seem to be sex based so that kind of training method didnt make a lot of sense. The passion between the two was somewhat forced at first, but as the book moves along I thought the relationship got a little better, but not like the overwhelming feelings Im used to seeing in a romance, it felt like it was just convenient for them. Teryn was a bit one dimensional to me; I couldnt get into his character at all. Jendaya was a strong woman who initially had to learn how to work her magic and survive her own, but by the end of the book seems very dependent on Teryn. All that being said, I liked the premise, I just didnt feel the passion between the two like I thought I should.
