In the mid twelfth century women were treated as chattel. They were little more than toys to be used by the aristocracy to get, maintain or build power. Connor, a Welsh Lord, sends his warrior and bard Rhodri to get his niece Nicole a descendent of King Arthur. He wants to use her for his own needs before the King of England decides how he wants to use her. Neither Rhodri nor Nicole expect the twists and turns their journey from England to Wales will take.

Shari Anton has done an excellent job developing her characters, the dialogue and this storyline. We go from Wales to a convent in England, to Oxford and then take the back roads and trails on the return trip trying to avoid the Earl de Vere and his men. Seems he'd just as soon hang Rhodri as look at him.

Rhodri is well developed as a man of honor among the not so honorable people they run into along the way. Nicole is one of those women who would have loved the women's lib movement! She's well written as a spoiled little girl who's been locked away in a convent for eight years. Luckily for her the Mother Abbess has taken her in hand and helps her to grow into a strong willed but caring person. All of the three sisters have special gifts as direct descendents of King Arthur. Nicole is gifted or cursed depending on which of the spirits is talking to her at the time. Sometimes they’re begging for help to release their soul. At other times she’s so inundated she can’t help anyone. Her dead brother keeps asking for her to kill her brother-in-law.

Putting a convent raised virgin into the hands of a single warrior for a trek across the land is risky business. They fight like an old married couple, argue about who's in control, are often loving, caring, romantic, funny. She has her warrior eating out of her hand when one or the other isn't angry or pouting. Shari Anton has given us a book well worth reading.
