| This book was a total surprise to me. I love historical books, especially ones about mail order brides. The fact that this particular book was very short initially was disappointing. However, the fact that the book was a quick read had absolutely no bearing on the success of the book.
Elizabeth Strang (Libby) met Alistair James Mackenzie (Jim) on a train headed west. While on the train, Jim and Libby never exchanged names but he took up for her when an older man was trying to harass her. Each was traveling for different reasons but they ended up in the same small town. As they exited the train, there were about ten men awaiting the arrival of mail order brides. Libby’s fiancé was not there because he had been accidentally killed two days before. Jim saw Libby’s reaction and asked to speak to her. They were married minutes later with the other couples. The awakening of this unusual relationship was the basis for the rest of the story. Mr. Alex de Kok managed to relay an abundance of information in few words in this book. The plot involved the popular subject of mail order brides but the storyline was slanted in such a way that it was a fresh look at the actions of our western ancestors. The characters were well developed and interesting. The scenery was described in a way that made me feel as if I were there. I loved this story and recommend it to everyone.
