Maura Wagner begged Bob Abbey, lunewolf pack leader, to dissolve her mating to Pete. Bob refused. Pete was so angry that Maura had talked to the pack leader about him that he drove her outside lunewolf territory and threw her out into the snow without even a jacket. Josie Balzon heard her frightened thoughts and recognized her as the little lunewolf bitch who’d come with Niccolo’s lunewolf mate, Heidi when Josie had to protect Maura from her abusive mate. Maura was subconsciously looking for Josie; he made her feel safe and cherished. Josie was looking for Maura too. She made him feel things he wasn’t sure he should, like feeding her his kill.

For Life could technically be read as a stand alone story, but to really understand and enjoy the richness, it should be read in order with the rest of the books in the series. In this the fifth book of the series, we learn more about the gift of the Malta werewolves and how it works in the practical sense. Josie has the strongest gift of all the Malta werewolves, but when he promised to fight without using the gift, Josie was even more helpless because he’d come to depend on the gift so strongly that his other defenses had become lax. For Life is steeped in age-old traditions and showcases pack law. Maura’s deepest desires are to be loved and cherished. Both come naturally to Josie who honors pack law because it is necessary for the survival of the pack. The Malta bitches are too in awe or frightened of Josie’s gift, but Maura fell in love with him when he protected her and her love is unconditional, gift and all. I love the Werewolves of Malta series. I have been waiting expectantly for Josie’s story and I wasn’t disappointed. What a great book!
