While Cara Talbot is still reeling from the shock of loosing her parents and sister in a mudslide that destroyed their home, she is sent to live with a distant cousin and his family. Cara's cousin is a sullen man with a wife and five sons living on an impoverished dairy farm in Indiana in a tiny little house. The family doesn't have enough for themselves much less any extras to give to Cara who has lost everything. Two of the boys also seem to resent Cara but she didn't ask to live with them anymore than they want her there. But as Cara struggles to find a place in her new home she discovers happiness in caring for an autistic child and that she isn't the only "March Misfit."

This is a sweet and poignant story. The March family are very poor and don't really have the resources to add another member to their family but they still took Cara in when she lost her family. Cara is grateful and tries hard to give something back to the proud family. I loved the character of Cara, even while she is hurting and her situation seems so unjust, she tries hard to make the best of it and to reach out to the family who has taken her in. The March family, however doesn't seem to know how to accept help. I cried for how cruel and unjust the situation is for Cara but I was also proud of her. This book will pull out all your emotions and swirl them around and then send them back to you. As Cara struggles to finds place in the March family, she discovers that caring for another can ease her pain. While I loved Cara, I didn't care for the March family. If you want to take a family member in at least act like you want them there! If you want an emotional story about making the most of your situation, you will enjoy March Misfit.
