| A mysterious visitor calling herself the Dowager Duchess of Blooming calls on the Marquis of Raceworth during a card party. Expecting an elderly matron he delays, leaving her waiting alone with her companion. He is surprised to meet a young and beautiful widow and is very attracted to her, until she announces that his grandmother the late and redoubtable Lady Elder's pearls actually belong to her family and that she has the documents to prove it. Race is unwilling to give up the pearls but is very willing to examine her documents or anything else he can persuade her to show him.
Ms. Grey has written and extremely good historical romance full of sensual love scenes, mystery and intrigue. Susannah, the dowager duchess, has no love for London or Society, and is unwillingly drawn into it by her need to acquire the pearls and her attraction to Race. There are others that also want the pearls and they are much less scrupulous in their attempts to get them leading to misunderstandings, accusations, and danger. The romantic tension between Race and Susannah builds to some scorching love scenes. The subplot of Gibby's affair of honor adds a lighter note to the story. As usual, Lord Chesterfield's wisdom is quoted throughout the tale to the amusement of the reader and the chagrin of Race. The combination of a gripping plot, great love scenes and well drawn characters make this book impossible to put down. The author has a wonderful feel for the era and its customs. Her Marquis is everything a Regency Corinthian should be and more, since she gives these very sexy men human foibles and has a great sense of humor. This second of the Rogues Dynasty trilogy is as good as the first and one of my favorites of a favorite author's work.
