| Jennifer Randall is a Level 10 Protector for the Society. Her job is to protect the rest of humanity from other beings like demons, ghouls, and shapeshifters. The only problem is that she?s been having trouble telling the difference between humans and non-humans lately. That?s why she doesn?t recognize her new husband for what he is when she marries him: Blake Barrington is a demon.
Now that they?re back from their honeymoon, they?re both after the same thing: the Bracelet of Invincibility. Jenn has been assigned to retrieve it for the Society and Blake wants it to reverse his demonic transformation and become human again. Though the beginning is a little slow and is told as a memory, it lays down the foundation for the rest of the story. It explains why and how Jenn meets Blake but isn?t able to tell he is a demon. From there, it accelerates into an action-packed story full of great characters. Jenn is a truly kick-butt heroine who does not shy from confrontations with anything, including werewolves and a Sasquatch. However, she?s also able to find the humor in most situations. Blake is a pretty sensitive guy, for a demon, and he will do anything to protect Jenn from the threat against her. The two of them together are a steamy couple who burn up the pages whenever they?re alone. Of course, they are not the only great characters in this story. There is a wonderful cast of secondary characters who enrich this story with their presence, especially Partner, Jenn?s handheld Personal Partner. His many personalities, including a stint as a southern belle, really lighten the mood and keep the laughter rolling. This is a thoroughly enjoyable story and has a good ending with some really unexpected twists. However, there are places in the story where Jenn seems to address the reader directly which can jar the reader out of the story and break up the flow a little.
