| Book Two in the “Paradise Brides” series reunited Mattie with her older sister Minda. Minda had come to Paradise, Nebraska two years before as a mail-order bride. She was not aware that Mattie was now divorced. Mattie was coming to live in Paradise and hoped to get a job teaching. When she came down the steps of the stagecoach, she was assisted by Caldwell Hackett, the man who had tried to take Minda from her future husband Brixton.
Call had been the schoolteacher in Paradise. He wanted to start a business “horse doctoring” so when Mattie came, he was able to leave the school in her hands. He was barely making ends meet because people were slow to pay his bill. Then something happened during their wedding ceremony—her ex-husband showed up saying they were not divorced. Strange things started happening all over the town and it seemed, at one point, that they would be forced to leave Paradise. I chose to read book one before reading this offering and I’m glad I did. It is not absolutely necessary, but it does flow so well into this book. I love Ms. Hanson’s writing style. She has a way of telling a story that keeps me spellbound. I could not stop turning the pages. There were multi-level incidents which kept the storyline escalating to the depths of my emotions. I felt as if I was involved in the trauma the main characters faced. The ‘bad guy’ was so easy to dislike. Hanson builds depth into her characters. She also offers her readers intensity which helps us feel part of her story. Her descriptive writing mannerisms and her complexity make her characters memorable. Ms. Hanson is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. She definitely is on my must read list. I recommend her books to everyone. I cannot wait for her next book to come out. Great job, Ms. Hanson!
