| Harold Morrison has had a number of restaurant jobs, but he never holds one for more than three or four months. When the employment office sends him to Marta's Place, he manages to become a partner. But the job takes on aspects he never envisioned.
Sexy customer Arabelle Franklin perhaps an actress, perhaps just a prostitute fills his dreams. But homely Marta, twice his age with thick ankles, demands his sexual attentions. Marta ccontrols him and he can only see Ara in secret. And when Ara is murdered, things get really complicated. Hal actually has a lot on the ball. His ideas really increase business at Marta's Place. We are never told why he is such a drifter. The story is both dark and gritty. None of the characters are especially likable, but they are definitely interesting. Hal becomes a prime murder suspect with some oddball cohorts at the local tavern. There's a big drug kingpin, a serious illness, and lots of other scattered elements. It has the feel of a 40s gangster flick. There's no real romance, and no real resolution, but it is an interesting tale.
