| Catharine Brooks, an artist, has finally made the long trip to Spain from Arizona to visit her best friend Sierra, an actress. Sierra has arranged for her to stay at a fabulous villa outside of Seville, with a handsome driver on call. Cat decides to visit the bullfights one afternoon and is mesmerized by a matador in a gold mask. They seem to have a connection, even across the crowded bullring. A man approaches her after the fight and leads her to the matador. Rogelio Cruz, the man in the mask, seems to have felt the same connection, and they arrange to meet again. Catharine finds herself rapidly falling in love with the handsome Spaniard, and he seems to return her feelings. He, however, is part of a scandal involving improper practices in his sport, and the Spanish equivalent of the mafia is after him and anyone he cares about. Catharine loves him too much to let him send her away, but may not have a choice.
The author takes the reader on a trip to Spain, describing Seville and its environs very vividly. She has a real feel for the bullring and it’s traditions, describing them very well. Cat and Rogelio’s love story is very involving as is the subplot of Sierra’s first starring role in Romeo and Juliet. The final scene in the bullring is very suspenseful. The story is very well written and the reader will find it hard to put down.
