Brianna Stafford, the daughter of the Duke of Durham, relishes the freedom that has finally come to her upon graduation from her convent school. Though she’s already engaged, she is going to enjoy her London season, each and every moment. Her fiancé, Reginald, is off at sea. Brianna can’t wait to explore London in his absence. Unfortunately, a problem arises when her twin sister, Angelica, becomes engaged, against her will, to Nicholas Santrell, the Earl of Saxford. Angelica wants no part in the match so she convinces Brianna to take her place and persuade the Earl that he doesn’t want the match either. Brianna is the more hoydenish of the twins and Angelica is sure that Brianna will easily dissuade the Earl.

Unfortunately, the rakehell Earl wants to marry Angelica. Her beauty and spunky temperament entice him. Regrettably, Angelica seems to know about his rakish ways and is most obstinate about the match. She wants no part in it. Nicholas is determined to convince her otherwise. In this game of masquerade and hidden identity, will Brianna be able to save her sister from the Earl, and keep her own heart safe at the same time?

Masquerade is an enjoyable and sensuous tale of a misguided attraction. Brianna is sure she can never come to like the Earl, but she quickly finds out otherwise as his kisses and smiles tempt her into delicious sin. She is a delightful personality in the story and stands out against her more timid sister. Her character really goes against the grain of 1800s England, which is appealing but at the same time, tends to take one out of the setting of the story because she ignores so many of the rules and mores of that time period. Nicholas, while an engaging character, doesn’t seem like much of a rake either. He’s far too kind and gives up his supposedly debauched ways too easily. However, in the grand scheme of the story, these are minor problems that I was able to set aside. The comedy of hidden identities plays out well and Julia Templeton has a deft touch in creating memorable scenes and likable characters. There is a definite bond between Brianna and Nicholas and that more than anything will keep you reading until the very end.
