| Victoria Connor is worried about her grandfather. He recently suffered a stroke and she wants to be closer so she can help and keep an eye on him. Accepting a job as a kindergarten teacher in the nearest town seems the best way. James Montgomery appears to be the local handyman. His days are filled with working around the homestead and getting to know Victoria. All too soon she finds out that he has an ulterior motive. He's been earning her trust, even her love, while investigating both her and her Gramps for being illegal moonshiners.
Wendy Davy pens a suspenseful tale of innocent people taken advantage of and pains from the past that haunt both Victoria and James. The good times of their relationship help them both to heal but the betrayal she feels when James turns out to be something other than she thought puts stress on her mind, heart, and faith. Ms. Davy wraps the journey toward a deeper faith in an excellent mystery that will keep us guessing right to the last pages about who the bad guys are. The lives of the characters are well built to the point where their lives intersect and they're given a chance to heal that means more to them than anything before. Victoria's past gives us a selection of bad guys that keep us leaning in one direction. But the author doesn't make it that easy to figure out for all of us amateur sleuths who like a good drama without letting us find out too soon. This is a first novel by Ms. Davy but I'm definitely looking forward to more from her in the future.
