Cassie Hamilton has messed up. She's lost custody of her seven-year-old daughter Heather and is trying to win it back. She left LA and a career in real estate to return to Lake Placid. We do not discover the actual nature of her problems until quite late in the story. She's now running a small chocolate shop in Dewitt.

She encounters Evan Jorgensen, a search and rescue specialist with the New York State Police. They once shared a night neither can forget, the night before he left for duty in Iraq. He breaks out in a rash whenever he thinks of her.

Cassie feels unlovable because of her mistakes. Evan fears the effects of his military duty will control his future. And Cassie's old boyfriend Dylan Black, a sleazy movie producer, has sent a very dangerous man to track her down.

Cassie and Evan share a love of the outdoors and a passion that even tops her obsession with chocolate kisses. She has a good friend named Karen and a surprisingly supportive ex-husband named Jake. All characters are believable, and the leads were likable. But I felt the action lagged a bit and I wasn't entirely satisfied with the motives of those who stalked Cassie. I also would have liked to learn more than what was revealed about Cassie's parents.

Still, author St. Thomas shows promise, and I hope she continues to write.
