| Jade McAllister left Pineyville, Tennessee ten years ago—immediately after high school graduation. She couldn’t wait to get away from her mother whose lifestyle was embarrassing. She also tried to hate the rich-boy Shane that had kissed her once and then, along with friends, laughed at her. Now, after finally reconciling with her mother, she returned to Pineyville to take care of her mother. Doctors had warned her that her mom would likely not survive another heart attack. She was lucky to get a job at the Pineyville Church as administrative assistant. Then she met the staff....
Shane Calkin, after life-altering disasters in his life, was now the Youth Pastor at the church. He was granted custody of his niece, Susie, after the death of his sister. His relationship with his parents was almost non-existent since he left the corporate world to serve God. Shane was the first to see Jade when she arrived at the church for her first day. He realized things would never be the same after confronting Jade. She didn’t see his best side since he ploughed into her and spilt coffee all over her. This look at a second chance was a great read. It was a detailed, emotionally charged book about two people from opposite environments who had instant feelings but could not (would not) pursue them. Ms. Mary Manners has done a good job of revealing the lives of these two main characters without making the book dull. I felt as if I had known these two and I certainly felt their pain. Her secondary characters were many and diverse. It was easy to love most of them. The story of how their lives revolved around their relationship with God was effective. I felt part of the town and couldn’t wait for the next part of the story. I definitely didn’t want to see it end. I am pleased to recommend this book to all readers. This author will be one I will search out in the future.
