In her homeland of Scotland, they thought Maggie was possessed. Because she was the only one who survived the attack on her family and village, others thought she was cursed. She was gifted to be able to handle medical problems so she signed up as an indentured servant for the chance to go to the New World. Her trip over the seas was not uneventful and she dreaded what would happen when she was auctioned off. Someone must have been watching out for her because a married man named Seth Martin bought her for very little money and took her home to help his sickly wife and take care of his children.

Tom Roberts was a longtime friend of Seth, but their lifestyles were opposite. Tom travelled and stayed outdoors hunting all winter. He never stayed anywhere long and had no intention of marrying and having children running around like Seth did. His sickly wife, Naomi, was a great wife and mother, but too frail to be much of a help to Seth. Tom was amazed when he met Maggie and, even though he was attracted, he was determined not to lose his independence.

There were lots of things going on in this book. Everyone ought to be able to find someone and something that will entertain them. The family and servants of Seth Martin had to move around quite a bit. That didn’t change the fact that Seth tried to take care of them all. Tom would show up at the oddest of times. When he first left them, he was sure he wouldn’t be back.

These great “family” members, and the less desirable men who chased after what they couldn’t have, kept me mesmerized. There is a lot of information concerning this period of history which will interest the history buff. The on-going relationship between Tom and Maggie, as well as the danger she had following her around, was extremely interesting.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical romance. You will not be disappointed.
