Monday nights Millie Townsend has a ritual at closing time. She knows Paul Whittier will be coming for his fix of pie and coffee after work. One Monday night is a disaster. Paul tells her he'll be going to San Francisco to work as a civil engineer. Then her car won't start. But Paul kisses her good bye. At least she has that to hang onto.

Marianne Arkins writes one of those books that should come with a box of Kleenex attached, or at least one of those pocket packs. It's 1948, Truman and Dewey are running neck and neck. Millie's character isn't atypical for those post war years. She runs the family business in her home town, didn't even dream of leaving. As a super shy thirty-four year old woman she didn't do more than think of telling Paul how she felt. The bra burning women's lib movement was still a long ways away. Even if it had been alive and well her type of shyness probably wouldn't have let her make a move.

Paul is the flip side of the coin. He has a wanderlust, wants more out of life than what the town can give him. When his dad died he no longer had family to keep him so was willing and able to move on. He's torn and he does hint gently at Millie that maybe something could keep him there but she's unable to state her feelings.

Ms. Arkins has done a great job with this book of memories of a different time in our history. Even though I'm sure there are still people like Paul and Millie around, we don't hear about them much. I'm glad the author reminds us. This is a sweet read. But remember what I said about needing tissues handy!!

This was a fun read but it does make me wish we had more information.
