Nighthawk Lake has become very important to some very dangerous people. George “Pop” Haywood thinks that he has gold on the land and he and his tenant filed a claim. Shortly thereafter, Pop dies in a fatal accident, and not three months after that his granddaughter and heir Cadie nearly dies in a car accident. She returns to Nighthawk to recover and paint. Marc, her tenant, a former police detective turned writer, just wants to be left alone, but circumstances bring them closer and closer together. Someone is willing to do anything to take possession of the Nighthawk Lake property.

I really enjoyed this romantic suspense tale. The main characters are well written, likable and their relationship develops at a quick but realistic pace. Both have been hurt in their previous long-term relationships and that plus circumstances make them wary of any new love interest. The suspense builds as the story goes on and although I had some suspicions I really was not sure who the killer was until the end. The love scenes between Marc and Cadie are also very good. The setting of a remote lakefront cottage with a possible gold claim is ideal for this type of story and the author makes good use of every possibility. The combination of a very good mystery, fine love story, and gripping suspense make this a book that will be very difficult to put down.
