Adam is a police chief in a small town where he's lived for a long time. His wife was rumored to be flighty and had left him fifteen years ago, never to return. Stunned and hurt by her disappearance, he'd been busy raising his son and working ever since. When Beth came back to town, he couldn't believe how attracted to her he was. When mysterious murders start happening in his small town, Beth is one of the first people on the scene, because she's a reporter. Adam believes that if it wasn't for the fact he was the police chief, she would even notice him. She's nine years his junior and doesn't even realize he's alive. Or so he thinks.

Misfit in Middle America is a great little story with some very likeable characters. It is told completely from Adam's point of view, and this unusual point of view keeps your attention. Justin is his son, who is very into art and the gothic scene. Although Adam seems bewildered by his actions sometimes, he accepts him with unconditional love. Beth comes across as a cold woman at first, but as he gets to know her she becomes more likeable. There is some very hot sex in this short story; it nearly burns up the pages. A definite keeper, Misfit in Middle America is an unusual addition to my keeper shelf.
